Gut Microbiome and Skin Health: Strengthening the Barrier from Within

Gut Microbiome and Skin Health: Strengthening the Barrier from Within

The connection between gut health and skin health runs deeper than most realize. Many skin diseases  including acne, eczema, and psoriasis — are now linked to an altered gut microbiome. The inner surface of our gut and the outer surface of our skin may seem worlds apart, yet both are lined with epithelial cells that directly interact with microbes.

These two barriers the gut lining and the skin surface  are our first lines of defense against environmental and microbial threats. Their health determines not only how we digest and absorb nutrients, but also how our skin looks, feels, and functions.

The Role of the Gut Barrier

The intestinal epithelial barrier plays a critical role in regulating the absorption of fluids, electrolytes, and nutrients while preventing pathogens and toxins from entering circulation. When this barrier is strong, the body maintains balance and harmony.

However, when gut dysbiosis (an imbalance of the intestinal microbiome) occurs, harmful bacteria known as pathobiontscan multiply. This leads to:

  • Excess bacterial growth and competition for nutrients

  • Production of toxic metabolites

  • Local and systemic inflammation that can affect the skin

Simply put, an unhealthy gut can cause widespread inflammation, leading to visible skin issues such as breakouts, redness, or irritation.

Why Gut Integrity Matters for Skin Health

Maintaining the integrity of tight junctions between intestinal epithelial cells is essential for a healthy gut barrier. When these junctions weaken, toxins and inflammatory molecules can “leak” into the bloodstream a phenomenon often referred to as leaky gut — which contributes to systemic inflammation and skin disorders.

Strengthening the gut lining helps reduce this inflammation at its source, allowing the skin to recover its natural balance and radiance.

How Probiotics Restore the Gut Barrier

Probiotics are beneficial bacteria that help maintain and repair the intestinal lining. Scientific studies have demonstrated that certain probiotic strains enhance epithelial barrier function, reduce inflammation, and support microbiome diversity.

At Theranera, we selected specific strains with a proven ability to protect and restore the intestinal barrier against inflammatory damage:

  • Bifidobacterium lactis BS01

  • Lactobacillus rhamnosus LR05

  • Lactoplantibacillus plantarum LP01

These strains were chosen based on their performance in in vitro studies using Caco-2 gut cell models and Trans Epithelial Electrical Resistance (TEER) assays, which measure the integrity of the gut barrier.

Scientific Results: Barrier Protection and Restoration

In TEER assays stimulated with tumor necrosis factor α (TNF-α) and interleukin-1β (IL-1β) — two pro-inflammatory molecules known to damage gut membranes — all three probiotic strains demonstrated remarkable protective effects:

Strain Prevention of Damage Restoration After Damage
Bifidobacterium lactis BS01 88% 85%
Lactoplantibacillus plantarum LP01 100% 100%
Lactobacillus rhamnosus LR05 94% 100%

All strains were statistically significant (p < 0.001) in preventing and restoring intestinal barrier integrity.
✅ Only L. plantarum LP01 achieved complete protection and restoration (100%) in both tests, proving its superior ability to prevent tight junction damage and enhance gut resilience.

From Gut to Skin: The Theranera Approach

At Theranera, we harness this scientific insight to create skincare and wellness solutions that work from the inside out. By supporting gut barrier function and restoring microbial balance, our acne probiotics and microbiome skincareformulations help reduce inflammation at its root.

The result? Stronger skin, improved clarity, and a naturally balanced glow.

Heal your gut. Calm your skin. Restore your balance — with Theranera.
